Title: (FINISHED) Pee Wee Pobletts #46 1962 season MOVED TO OPEN WHEELED CARS/MODIFIEDS
Post by: Bob P. on June 16, 2017, 05:51:26 PM
This is going to be replica build of the #46 driven by Pee Wee Pobletts in 1962, at Williams Grove and Lincoln speedways in Pa.
The car had a Pontiac hood ornament and the Indian face light up when racing.

This car had a Pontiac body and was powered by either a 389 or 421 Pontiac engine.
The body was a five window with the roof shortened and the divider post cut out.

In an effort to duplicate this body as close as I could, I used two resin bodies from Big Donkey resin.
I used a 33 Chevy three window coupe for the lower body and rear window.
I cut the roof off of a 34 Ford five window coupe and shortened the roof.

33 Chevy on the left, 34 Ford on right with roof removed and marked for shortening.

Roof in place and sides of the body shortened. The photo of the car in red, is a full size replica .

Chevy rear window removed on the left photo and installed in the Ford roof on the right.

Roof glued on, and the 33 Chevy rear window, installed in the rear of the 34 Ford roof.

A ton of work has gone into this already and it's obvious that you have great "vision" Bob. To be able to "see" this puzzle piece fit into this puzzle piece is somewhat of a gift and you have it. Very well done so far and learning alot with your shown techniques.

:)  This is truly amazing, Bob.  I agree with David.  It, as said, will be a one of a kind when completed.  I admire your willingness to tackle such a project.

But, for me,  my days of such devotion  are past, as I wind down a long career of model building.

Looking forward to seeing your finished model.

That is some outstanding body work.  Amazingly the carpet monster did not swallow one of those body pieces.  Looking forward to the completion of this one.  BTW, what are you going to be using for a chassis?

To answer your question Rick, I will be using a 32 Ford frame from a kit. The kit had coil springs in the rear so I had to install a cross leaf spring carrier in the frame. The frame also had to be narrowed.

Revell Monogram parts pack 421 Pontiac engine.
Rear fender cut outs filled in ready for putty.
Using a quick change rear end from Big Donkey resin.

Hondo requested some pictures of the chassis modifications for this build.

I cut the frame down the middle and narrowed it. After narrowing, I cut the floor boards out and used thin plastic, to put the floor boards on the bottom of the frame instead of on top. Prior to 1962 these cars usually had the transmission and drive shaft under the floor boards. Around 1962 when they started narrowing, cutting down and lowering the bodies, the transmission and drive shaft was above the floor boards. The quick change rear, radius rods, tires and wheels are resin, from Big Donkey resin

Bob great fab work on the body! It reminded me when I did my 33 Chevy (the big 8) coupe I used an AMT 34 5 window as a starting point, Yes it is a lot of work but fun, so much fun I did another for Fred to use as a master. Again great job!

Beautiful work on that chassis.  Not being familiar with these cars, did they have some sort of cover over the transmission?  Or did they just let the brass in their shorts suffice?  ::)
