Title: ( FINISHED) Roy Morral 880, driver Junior Ritchey, 1966-67-68
Post by: Bob P. on September 17, 2017, 04:31:11 PM
This is a replica build of the number 880 owned by Roy Morral of Breezewood, Pa, driven by Junior Ritchey. This car raced at Bedford, Port Royal, Williams grove, and Hagerstown speedway during this time period.

By 1966 everyone in central Pa knew the converted sprint cars were faster than the Pa. style super modified's. The converted sprint cars were not legal in the area until 1967. So Roy Morral and several other car owners went to Floyd Travis, well know builder of the Trevis Craft sprint cars, and had him build a car legal for the track specs in central Pa. The frame had to be thirty inches wide with a wheelbase of ninety inches minimum. These were stretched sprint cars with torsion bar suspension front and rear. The roll cages were welded on and they couldn’t look like a sprint car.

I used a 1/24th scale sprint car model for this build.
I lengthened the frame between the fire wall and front radius rod mounting point, using aluminum tubing.
The roll cage was removed, and a new roll cage attached, made from plastic coated wire.
The roof is formed out of .2 MM aluminum sheet.
The rear panel, side panels, hood and wing are made from .5 MM aluminum flashing.
All panels have a lip made from .2 MM thin plastic sheet. This should make the fit look better when assembled.

Decals made by Greg Holland VSRN on this site.

:)  Yes, this is really nice.

Although not in Pennsylvania, I remember the days of supermodifieds like this one.  Late 50s and early 60s for us.

I especially like the color.  Being an artist and color guy, it just really appeals to me.  Not to mention all the use of the aluminum tubing and sheet.  Quite some craftsmanship here.

Good one, Bob.

Ed,

The rear wheels and tires came from Big Donkey resin.
The front wheels and tires are from an Edmunds super modified kit.

Big Donkey also has front wheels and tires very similar to these available.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments.

This was my first super modified replica build, using a sprint car kit as a base.

Man Bob...this REPLICA BUILD really looks GREAT. The history of the Supermodifieds across the nation is awesome. You doing a replica build of this car is preserving that History. Not to mention that your craftsmanship is top notch..

Thanks again everyone for you nice comments on this build.

I really enjoy building replicas from the late fifties and into the late sixties.
All of my replicas are cars that raced in the central Pa. area.
