A lot of the guys used to use "Jerry cans"for their gas cans. Five gallons would get ya around the track a bunch. Ya had to be careful when you were welding the filler neck in. Buddy of mine thought he had it cleaned pretty good.....NOT! Knocked him back a few feet when it went "WHOOOOOP"!  He was okay, just scared the heck out of him!!

I probably can't think of what was used for gas tanks back in the day, even when I started going to races on a somewhat regular basis, circa 1968.....
