Below is a photo of the Bobby Hersh's bad crash at Williamsgrove speedway in late September of 1963.
Bobby was conscious when removed from the car, but lost consciousness on the way to the hospital.
He had a badly broken leg and serious head injuries. The Doctors were sure he was going to die so they never repaired his broken leg.
Bobby regained consciousness in December in the Harrisburg hospital. There was a Christmas tree in his room. He did survive but was never able to walk without crutches due to his leg injury.

The photo below was taken in 1964 at Williamsgrove speedway. Bobby Hersh is on the right end of the photo.
These are some of the most popular drivers from this time period.

:)  A great model, but such a sad story.  He made it, though.

Thanks for the nice replies.

Another part of the sad story. Someone came to his home and ask to borrow all his photo albums to make copies. They were never returned.

looks Fabulous Bob! terrific build I love all these old supers they all had they own style , one ??  did he races with a hood or not  I see what looks like a hood over by the truck front wheel , I know some tracks had a rule that if you didn't have a hood you could not race

Jim,

To answer your question about racing without a hood. I think it started at Williams Grove speedway in 1961.
The rules allowed racing without a hood in 1961-62 and part of 1963. Then they came out with a rule that the radiator had to be covered.
The number 1 of Johnny Mackison covered just the top of the radiator with a short piece of sheet metal, most went back to hoods. By 1964 hoods were mandatory.

As you stated, all the cars in that era were hand built and every car was different, that's why the sixties was my favorite time for racing.

Ray Tilley 1963 with just radiator covered.

Bob like you the sixties are my favorite , as my Dad started racing in 62 or 63 and we had to be at the track at 4.30 when the pit gate opened we got to see all the cars being flat towed or trailered to the track , I can still see and remember setting in the stands watching everyone pull in . it wasn't till 65 and 66 that the v8 super modifieds started cutting down the body's and 1970 was the first year the 6 cyl modifieds went to the cut down bodys so I got to see all the old jalopy to the "new" cut down super modified cars , it was a great time in my life and a great time in racing overall , Okc and Tulsa kept the 100" wheel base supers and modifieds around 1995 , in the mid 80's they even brought in the Usac dirt champ cars to race with our NCRA 100" champ dirt (super modifieds) but I still like to model the cars from the 60's early 70's
