Title: Maybe a jalopy, maybe a super..........
Post by: Hondo on November 30, 2020, 01:27:09 PM
Here's what I did with a bunch of Big Donkey Resin parts.
I only added some Evergreen pieces, grill shell, a steering wheel, decals and the parts box Nailhead motor.

I love the general style, but feel its about two scale feet too long in the nose. The nailhead is a classic power plant choice, nicely weathered. The radiator hoses, and radiator cap, missing is unfortunate.

Agreed, Hondo.  Negative comments have no place here.

Good work.  It's a nice model.  There have been some that long somewhere.

That is a neat race car very clean and by the way what kit did the nail head come from? it sure looks right at home in the engine bay.

I'm liking a lot of things on this race car. It reminds me of a type of race series they run in England. Forget the name of it.

Hey folks, thanks again for the nice replies.

FordGuy, that motor from my parts box was from about a '62 Buick kit or most likely a '40 Ford Coupe kit from many years ago.

Very nice clean build.
We had some this long, in central Pa. in the sixties.

That paint scheme is killer. There were a few of those long boys in N. Cal in the 60's also. The track was a 5/8 then and so the turns were a little longer than the shorter tracks. I don't think this wheel base would fair to well on the 1/4 mile bull rings. But...as we all know...Ya got to get out there(on the track) and give 'er hell....

Gary Davis....
Were you ever at the Clovis,CA track?
Was that a half mile?
Was there once in the fall of 1972 for a Sun. afternoon open comp race.

Hey Ed...never been to Clovis. It was  a 1/5th mile track to start with and then went to 1/2 mile from 1950-1976.
Man...I sure miss the Sunday afternoon Races at Shasta speedway, Anderson Ca. I lived about 1 1/2 miles from the track. I could hear the open comp cars hot lap'in from there. that was in the mid 60's. It was dirt then. And if I remember right...it was a 3/8 track then. Man...standing in the pits( 11:00 Sunday morning) in my white pants and taking in the smell of fresh wet dirt(clay..sorta) and Alcohol from the Super's was just way to cool. That memory is BLAZED in my brain forever.

I never got see them race , at least I don't remember so, but there was a sanctioning organization that ran these type of cars (Modifieds????/Super Modifieds?????/Sportsman?????) in Oklahoma ,Kansas and I think Texas (NCRA???) back in the day.  Your build looks like many that I have seen of the aforementioned in pictures or restored in person and in itself looks great!

Gary, Bob, Brian. thanks for the replies.
Brian, you are correct about the NCRA.
Those were cool cars. I'm sure they were fun to see.
Building one like that is on my "to do list."

Actually, on this build........ I mounted the axle where it was intended. The "cow catcher" had to extend beyond the front tires. Makes it look a bit lengthy.

NCRA stands for Northern California Racing Association. Most of the tracks from the Bay Area, North were NCRA. I think the tracks South of the Bay Area were still NASCAR rules. The majority of the NCRA tracks were small bull rings. I think Sacramento, and San Jose, were longer tracks that operated under NCRA rules.

....Actually I was referring to the oldest of the two NCRA's  the National Championship Racing Association
 http://www.racencra.com/
It gets somewhat confusing when discussing the supers and sprints sometimes depending on what part of the country your in....have had that happen to me before

OTD,
Like Brian explained above....... The cars we mentioned raced in the Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas area (never in California) from the late '60s thru the '70s.
That organization was the NCRA.
National Championship Racing Association.
There may be other groups with the same initials.

I think he was from Oklahoma.

Correct.
Emmett's grandson is Blake Hahn.
He races the ASCS 360 sprint car series (that Emmett started) and is a really good racer.
