Title: (FINAL UPDATED 9/23/18) Sprint car build, central Pa dream team #6918
Post by: Bob P. on August 23, 2018, 09:13:33 PM
I’m going to attempt a replica build of the 69K sprint car and hauler.
The 69K is referred to as the dream team in central Pa. The team is made up of three National sprint car hall of fame members, Car owner Don Kreitz, crew chief Davey Brown, who is 84 Years young and driver Lance Dewease. Davey also builds the engines for the team.. Davey has been turning wrenches on race cars for over sixty years. This is the third year for Lance Dewease as the driver.

I’ll be using an SWS chassis for this build. I had the privilege of meeting Justin several months ago. I was able to view some of his modern sprint car chassis and body panels he manufactures and sells. The quality of his products are excellent.
You can view his products here. https://www.swschassis.com/

Some of you, who have built sprint cars using the Revell / Monogram kits or SWS products may have a different and better way of building these than I do. I will try to keep you up to date on this build, with a how I did it, not a how to.

SWS chassis on the left, kit chassis on the right.

:)  I am sure you will do an excellent job, Bob.  I am not much into sprints, but I think the hauler is fantastic.

Wow. You got me all excited about the SWS chassis site as I've never heard of it. I could spend some $$$ there but all the options have got me confused. Don't really know what I need to check.

Tony,

If you go to the SWS web site, click on contact. His email address is up on the right top of the page.
I think the best approach is to email Justin a picture of the car you want to build.
Then he can pick the best match for the chassis and body panels you will need. He had to make a new mold, for the right side panel, for the 69K build. He usually responds to emails promptly.

I finished a few more steps last evening.

I soaked all the suspension parts in what used to be Wesley's white wall cleaner to remove the chrome finish.
I soak them overnight and then brush the chrome off with a soft tooth brush.

I purchased this product at dollar general. It seems to work a little slower than the old Wesley's product.

I installed locating pins for the front and rear torsion bars, radius rods and top shock mounts this morning.
I stripped the plastic off of the small diameter plastic coated wire and used the wire for the pins. The wire is .7MM diameter.

This is going to be a really special project. Many thanks to Justin for making modern sprint car models possible. Using his parts does require a good bit of additional stuff, some of which is in the old Monogram kit and some of which is available from after-market suppliers. But when it's all put together with a little scratch building, some incredible results are possible. I'm excited to watch this one develop!
Best,
Gary

I'll give you a little information on the graphic and developing the decals for this project.

I'm working with Greg Holland on the project VSRN on this forum.

I went to Williams grove speedway several weeks ago. I purchased a pit pass and went to the pits and took close up pictures of all the graphics on the car. I took about 22 photo's total. The crew was very understanding in allowing me to interfere a little with there work being done. I was there early, shortly after they arrived at the track.

I sent all the pictures to Greg for him to use in designing the decals. The decals will include all the graphics and all the contingency decals on the car.

Below is just an example of the close up pictures I provided to Greg.

(https://images56.fotki.com/v1664/photos/4/3814514/15937773/20180713_175606_resized-th.jpg) (https://public.fotki.com/Bob-P/the-dream-team-69k/20180713-175606-resized.html)Hosted on Fotki (https://www.fotki.com)

Below is a sample of some of the decals Greg has designed for this project.

I know Greg has put a lot of time and effort into this project. I hope I can complete the build
at a quality level that will showcase the outstanding decals he will be providing.

I mailed all of the body panels and the two wings to Greg, for him to use, for sizing the decals.

The pictures Bob took were ideal for making a set of decals this complex.
Not only were there pictures of everything that was needed, most of them were as "head-on" as possible, and well lighted. In addition, the pictures from his phone were very big files, which let me enlarge them to get all of the fine detail.

We really lucked out when Bob spotted a spare Top wing, next to the hauler. Normally, it's impossible to get a good clear picture of the top of the wing, when it's mounted on the car.

We've already done some work on matching the paint colors.

Now that I have the wings and body panels, the fun is just beginning.
Most of the drawing is done. Now I "just" need to do final scaling to fit, and to split the decals for the different body panels.

Like Bob said, it's been a lot of work so far, and there's a lot more to do, but I'm sure that we can pull this off.

But I may need a nap after it's all over !

I posted a little update below.

Tires and wheels painted and ready. Tire decals by Greg Holland.
(https://images14.fotki.com/v1665/photos/4/3814514/15937773/20180901_161106_resized-th.jpg) (https://public.fotki.com/Bob-P/the-dream-team-69k/20180901-161106-resized.html)Hosted on Fotki (https://www.fotki.com)

Engine installed. These old air cleaners are obsolite but will not be seen.
Fuel injection lines installed, small oil tank built and installed, no plug wires used on this build, very hard to see after body panels  and headers are installed.
(https://images14.fotki.com/v1665/photos/4/3814514/15937773/20180901_161021_resized-th.jpg) (https://public.fotki.com/Bob-P/the-dream-team-69k/20180901-161021-resized.html)Hosted on Fotki (https://www.fotki.com)

The chassis is positioned on a small fixture, I built, to hold the chassis in place, for installing the front and rear suspension.
This step has been a challenge for me in the past, I hope this helps the process.

Small update on this project.

I got the body panels and wings back from Greg Holland yesterday. I mailed them to Greg to use for sizing the decals.
Decals should arrive in the mail Monday.

Picture below of the painted panels. Light blue outside and flat black on the inside.

(https://images46.fotki.com/v147/photos/4/3814514/15937773/20180908_182233_resized-th.jpg) (https://public.fotki.com/Bob-P/the-dream-team-69k/20180908-182233-resized.html)Hosted on Fotki (https://www.fotki.com)

Krylon paint used for the light blue.
This paint sprayed very nice and the finish is good.

(https://images15.fotki.com/v1626/photos/4/3814514/15937773/20180908_182729_resized-th.jpg) (https://public.fotki.com/Bob-P/the-dream-team-69k/20180908-182729-resized.html)Hosted on Fotki (https://www.fotki.com)

Top and front wing panels shown. I used a combination of kit wing panels, and the right side panel is from SWS, that I cut the angle on the lower front. I also flattened the top center wing section and scaled it to 60 X 60, the current rules. The front wing middle section is from SWS with scratch made sides.

Well, I received the decals from Greg on Friday.

As mentioned previously, I mailed all the panels to Greg for him to size the decals, to fit the panels.
The fit is almost perfect.

Here's an update on installing the decals.
The white layer needs to be applied first.

(https://images12.fotki.com/v1667/photos/4/3814514/15937773/20180910_192158_resized-th.jpg) (https://public.fotki.com/Bob-P/the-dream-team-69k/20180910-192158-resized.html)Hosted on Fotki (https://www.fotki.com)

After the white has dried then apply the color layer.

Sorry for the dark picture quality.

I've also been working on the photo etched seat belts.
I might be getting too old for this close work with these small pieces.

Here's my seat I purchased from SWS.

Heck Bob, I'm enjoying watching this build.  Super fine work on this project.  Good luck on the belts, I have destroyed two sets of PE belts just lately, that age thing plays a factor for sure but I'll get it.  This is going to be one of those models you can look at all day when you finish, really fine craftsmanship here.  Keep the up-dates coming.

This is really looking good Bob! I'm anxious to see the Sprinter all decaled and sitt'in on all four feet....How do you like working with the P.E racing harness..the belts in particular? I tried them and don't care for the metal belts but really like the buckles for sure. They sure look good though....

Thanks again guys for the comments,

Gary,

I'm using those because they were the only ones I found, in blue, when I did a search. I'm not crazy about the metal belts but I think they will work OK or this build. Do you have a recommendation for a better belt supplier? I usually scratch build my belts on my sixties replica's.

Gary, you also made a comment about seeing this sitting on all four feet. I am concerned about just that. Hopefully I got the suspensions pins in the correct location so it will sit on all four wheels. I have the lower side panels installed and the suspension installation is next, so I'll know soon.

Hey Bob....I always make my own belts. I use a variety of materials for the belts. Some 24-25...20...maybe 16th belts I use 3M NEXCARE durable cloth tape. Equate makes the same tape but a little cheaper. It has a pretty cool pattern the looks like belt material. I found both in the Pharmacy section at Wal Mart. For the smaller stuff...32..43...I use the paper that Pro Tech has for his belt material. You can use masking tape also...

As far as the hardware goes, there are a few companies out there....1/32..RB Productions( US WWII Fighters.. beige).... 1/25-24...Modelcar Garage...Pro Tech....Replica & Miniatures of Maryland.... 1/24-20...Studio 27  Also Scale Motor Sports... 1/16..Future Attraction has a GREAT set of Belt Hardware along with RMof M. Scale Motor sports used to carry the 12th and 8th scale belt hardware...at least that's where i got them long time ago. I hope this helps you out Bob.

OH yes....If you want simpson logos for your belts....Gary at GWS Custom Decals has them in ALL those scales I mentioned. He's a member here so you can email/PM him if you want them. I got a sheet that has enough to do 10 sets in each scale.

Thanks David for the idea of opening up the hole in the wheels for slight alignment issues.
I have done that on some of my older replica builds. Sometimes I'll drill the front wheel holes off center to create an eccentric effect for minor adjustments.

Thanks Gary, for all the seat belt information. I copied and saved that information for future needs.

The belts actually went better than I thought they would. I worked under my lighted magnifying glass.
I'm not crazy about the metal belts but they were the color I needed.

Small update.

I think I might need to paint the headers flat black or semi-gloss black.
I don't have the skill or supplies to make them look like the real car.
They look like stainless steel that has turned blue and black from usage.

Thanks again David for the help on the headers. I have the paint I need to give your method a try.
I'm also going to experiment with chrome and wash with black and dark blue. I never tried this before so could be a failure.

Decals applied to the top and front wing center section.

I chromed a set of headers with a Molotow chrome pen.
My experience with this is, it looks fantastic, but if touched much it rubs off easily and dulls if handled.
On my model of the number 46 with the Pontiac hood ornament, I coated it with future. Future does dull it some.
Someone told me a better coating is Liquitex gloss varnish. Maybe try both on a plastic sample and see which works best.
I guess I should coat the chrome prior to applying a black wash???

Final update, Finished build will be posted very soon.

My last challenge on this build was to try to duplicate the look on the headers.
Thank you to David Bogard and Greg Hollond for your help and suggestions on how to duplicate the headers.

I chromed these headers with the Molotow chrome pen a week ago.
Yesterday I broke out my airbrush, that I swore I would never try to use again. I was never able to get any good results with an airbrush.I knew if I brushed Future on the headers it would dull them. So I loaded the air brush with some Future and sprayed it on the headers. To my surprise they looked very chrome with very little dulling effect.

Then for another process I never tried before, I applied a wash to the headers. I used acrylic paint, thinking if I don't like the results I could just wash it off. I mixed some black paint with water to make it very thin and applied it with a Q tip and it looked pretty good. Then I took some dark tan paint and added a little black to darken the paint. Then applied that with the Q tip. I left this dry for around six hours and applied two coats of Future with a paint brush.
I guess I got lucky, I'm pleased with the results.

Thanks for looking and thanks to everyone who offered advice on this build.
