Title: John Horak's 70 Chevelle semi-replica
Post by: Greg Birky on September 04, 2019, 09:04:46 AM
Hey guys, once again i trudge forward in hopes of resurrecting my model building ambitions...I started the 68 Chevelle a while back and will return to it at some point...for now I'm going to build a "replica from memory" since i am aware of no existing photos.  Mine were all lost through life's journey so I hope some details will be remembered as I go here.  The car was raced in the Hawkeye Downs Speedway sportsman (B Modified) class in the mid 70"s after Uncle Sam said I had loaded enough weapons on the F4 aircraft in SEA.  The car was built on a 57 Chevy chassis and had 3/4 ton Chevy truck front suspension and rear axle suspended on 64 Ford station wagon rear springs.  The real car was painted white with blue SS stripes on the hood and trunk lid, sponsor was Nesbitt's Bottling company and the number was 27.  I plan to use artistic license here with sponsor and number design and will honor John's dads Chevy/Olds dealership.  Although not an official sponsor of the effort, Johns dad gave us a ton of parts help and access to a frame machine and parts since this was a low budget effort.  So without further ado, here's where were at today through pictures...

I have one of these bodies I picked up as a pilfered kit at Michael's.  They took the complete chrome tree, tires, and most of the engine parts.  I have picked up the front and rear bumpers.  May use some of the ideas you have on this one.

Hi Rick, funny deal, I picked this kit up at a contest swap meet a couple of years ago for $5.00 in a baggie...mostly non essential parts missing!!!  Cheap is good these days!!!  No paint is good too...I decided I have to do more of these easier low detail builds or I’ll never get anywhere close to finishing anything.  It sucks to have to scale back how I want to build but life rolls on albeit difficult since my wife passed...If you have any questions feel free to ask!

Not meaning to hi-jack this thread, but what type chassis was under that Nova?  I have a spare '66 body that will going that direction and could use some information.

Looking real good Greg. Do not focus on what you cannot do but rather on the excellent work you can. This is going to be a terrific build! Here's an old Horak car from Davenport!
OMG, David, thank you for the pic!!!  All I have are a couple of Polaroids of it after being rebuilt after the rollover!!!  I didn"t know this pic existed.  I was involved in the build of this Nova and it's sister car #28 of John Wolf during the winter/spring of 70/71 but Uncle Sam came calling with a draft # of 68 in the spring of 71 so I went bomb loading for a few years and missed out on all the racing in Iowa for the next four years and was only stationed near one track the entire four years.  When I came home the car had been rebuilt completely and John and I raced it three times while building the 70 Chevelle.  We took the Nova to the '75 Winternationals at Knoxville and raced it a couple of times at Marshalltown, Iowa.  Didn't do that well but had fun none the less.  I'm so grateful for this photo, David!!!  I cant tell you how much it means to me to have it!!!  I will build a replica of it now!!!

Rick, this car had a much shortened and narrowed tri five chassis under it.  We took four chassis' and blew them completely apart and sandblasted them and then took two chassis and split the rails into two pieces to overlay the two complete chassis' to effectively double the thickness for strength.  I believe the wheel base was cut down to 108" and those frames were stiff as could be.  There was a sister car, #28, a Nova convertible built at the same time and it was identical in every way except for the lack of a roof.  Good times and a story to tell sometime if anyone wants to hear it.  Ask anything you want to know as I remember the car quite well.  I would love to know it's whereabouts today!!!

Thanks for the kind words David!!!  The Nova is now in queue for my next serious build!  I"m back and beginning to re-hone my seriously rusty skills but having fun again after many false starts due to life happening...Iron sharpens iron and i"m among some good men (iron) to get back up to speed...Here's a little Friday nite update, y'all...shes up and standing on her own!!!  Roll cage and dash are next...I'm pretty thrilled with the progress so far with this primitive kit!!!

I got a good start on the roll cage fabrication this afternoon. Need to add a few more bars and start work on dash, pedals and seat but all in all it's all about making steady progress for me on this one to see it finished...I'm using .060 Evergreen rod for the cage and I cut the doorbars out of an AMT roll cage...I can almost smell the welding in the air, lol!!!  I also lowered the car to a more level stance like the real car was.  That's about it for this time around, fella's!!!

Thanks for the kind words,Rick!  It’s been so long since I’ve actually been able to enjoy scratch building and just generally having fun building that I’ve decided that I need to keep things fairly simple and not sweat the small stuff l!  Getting my skill sets fine tuned after not building for so long is going to depend on steady building and seeing each project through to the finish in a reasonable time frame.  Hopefully I can finish this one in a couple of weeks and move on to the next one!!!  I believe that finishing models frequently rather than getting bogged down in super-detailing will be key in having fun and holding my interest in building!!!, so far, so good!!!  Sorry for writing a book but it feels good to talk about this project and getting my building fired up again!!!  It’s been nearly six years of life interruptions in building.  Thanks for humoring me, Rick and everyone else!!!🏁

It is!!!  None other than Dean Montgomery!!!  Back in the 60’s my great aunt and uncle lived in a nice little neighborhood in Davenport and they were were the ones who introduced me to stock car racing at the Davenport Speedway one summer while I was staying (having a ball) with them on summer vacation!  Not sure my mother ever forgave them for that, lol!!!  Anyway a few summers later I was staying with them again and we heard the mighty roar of a big block Chevy down the alley and went to investigate l.  Low and behold there sat this beautiful beast getting the tune put on her!!!  Dean wasn’t there but the crew was there preparing for the weekend and they told me to hop in and check the car out while it was running!!!  Instant fan of Dean Montgomery!!!  I met him in Cedar Rapids a few weeks later after the races in the pits when that same crew member told him about me and the night in the alley!!!  I later became a huge Bill McDonough fan and I’ll share that along with some other builds later but Dean was my first true hero!!!  Funny, all I can remember about that first ever race in Davenport was a cool looking pink Edsel that was a flat out beast!!!  By the way, this 67 Chevelle had a Lam-A-Glas front clip like Ray Guss’ 67 Chevelle had...

See fellas, I can bench race with the best of ‘em, lol 🤣🏁

After successfully building their Oktoberfest 57 Chevy in a week and a half and taking Sunday off the guys at the speed shop were back to work today putting in a new trunk floor and got quite a ways mounting the rebuilt quick change in the car.  The new Chrysler leaf springs should be in tomorrow so by the end of the week it should be fully sprung in the rear. Great progress today and good to be back on the Chevelle after a month off!!!

It’s been a very productive week at the speed shop and the guys seem pretty motivated right now heading into the winter build season!  Got the Big Donkey springs rear leaf springs into the shop yesterday and over the past few days they got the dash and steering column built and test fit and the seat located!  Progressing nicely I think!!!  Here’s a few pictures of the progress and thanks for looking!  All comments and questions are welcomed!!!

Thanks, David!  I’m having so much fun building again!

Thanks, Bob!  I want to say that this car was summer of 1976...In 1975 we had a 1968 Chevelle, orange with a black vinyl top that sat way too high in the front, looked like a whale taking a dump, lol!!!  It didn’t work very well at all.  Just a stock 396 with an L88 427 cam, nothing great!  The biggest problem was that John couldn’t drive, pretty much clueless and I think scared of it!!!  I stuck it out because I wanted to be involved so badly...The 70 Chevelle was built on a tri five Chevy chassis from scratch.  It was painted white with blue SS stripes, #27 with an orange Nesbitts Bottling sponsorship!  It was a sweet looking car and I believe was competitive with a 427 that year!  Once again, needed a real driver.  John ended up stuffing it in the wall in Cedar Rapids and bent the frame pretty good.  I don’t know what ever became of it but I think it could have been put on a frame machine and fixed!  I’m considering getting some decals done and changing up this car to represent a true late model from Hawkeye Downs since I’ve already put a quick change in it...just need to figure out who’s car it will be.

The guys at the speed shop made a little more progress today and got the engine and tranny and driveshaft fitted!  Great progress!  Here’s a few more pictures and thanks for looking!!!

....I really like the Mid West dirt Late Models from the mid 70's before everyone jumped on the Camaro bandwagon ...... how ever you decide to go with it as far as color and decals I'm sure that it will represent quite well the Iowa dirt track scene from the mid 70's  ....keeping an eye on this build...looks great!

Thanks Brian, the old pre Camaro cars were some of my favorites! To me they represent a time when almost anybody could get involved and cars and parts were relatively cheap and easy to find!!!  Salvage yards were the racers friend!!!

The guys and me at the speedshop have been working on a couple of non race projects for some winter/spring 2020 contests so we've kind of been slacking here on the Chevelle as of late...we were back to the Chevelle yesterday and worked on engine set back.  Had to modify the front crossmember and oil pan and build a new motor mount and shorter driveshaft...mission accomplished and completed.  Next we'llbe working on the rear suspension installing springs and shocks and looking at fabbing a fuel cell.  Thanks for looking and as always comments, questions and critiques are welcome here at my shop!!

I really like what you where able to accomplish with the rear axle assembly detail......hiding the kit rear axle mounting points with the quick change rear end and leafs.....always on the look out for ways to add simple detail to a build to enhance the WOW factor.

I’m glad you’re getting some ideas from this build, Brian!  I’m trying learn how to get some decent detail into a simple kit without bogging myself down to the point of losing interest and not finishing anything.  The Big Donkey leaf springs really worked out great with this style chassis and are easy to work with.  I ended up heating the resin a slight bit and dearching them a considerable amount...so far this build has been a blast and it’s getting closer to paint ever so quickly.🏁

Thanks for the comments guys!  So far it’s lots of fun building this Chevelle and getting my skills revived!  These simpler kits are entertaining my interest very well for now!  Shouldn’t be long that we’re going to be getting ready for paint!  Frieden’s shop...not quite but I wish!  I’m in Alabama for a funeral but have some pictures I may try to post later tonight.  Probably back to the Chevelle by the first of next week...🏁

I’m home from ‘Bama and i have a couple of pictures I didn’t get up here before my trip.  Started a fuel cell and front hoop!  Will need to finish them up and get a shifter mounted and I will be nearly ready for paint...I think the details are pretty much there that I’m going to do without getting too deep on this one.  Thanks for looking, gentlemen!!!

What are you using for the rear shocks??  The shock mounts look clean where they attach......more than likely something else of yours I'll try and replicate in the future.
Title: Re: John Horak's 70 Chevelle semi-replica

Hey Brian, the rear shocks are a piece of plastic tubing for the shock body and a length of brass rod that slides into the plastic tubing.  I drilled a hole in the floor pan to receive the tubing, bend an L bend in the brass rod, slip the tubing into the hole in the floor and adjust the brass rod to line up with the leaf spring and super glue the rod in place on the side of the spring.  Once the rod is set you can glue the tube from the top side of the floor pan.  Once the chassis is painted the shocks can be detail painted with chrome shock rods and whatever shock body color you like.  Very simple but I think they’ll look great when everything is painted and assembles.  Just trying an idea I had to keep it very simple so as not to get bogged down in too much detail and lose interest.  Give it a try...sure works for me!🏁

So something along the lines of K&S Brass rods and Evergreen tubing I take it?

Exactly.  I’m using some black styrene tubing that I’ve had since the mid 80’s but the same as Evergreen.  Hey Brian, here is a shot of the top side of the chassis showing the unseen part of the shocks.

Front hoop will glue to firewall with a dot of epoxy on each side of the car.

David, the interior will go into the body first and the chassis has a little forward and aft slop to it so my thought is that as I cement the chassis to the interior bucket and the front hoop to the firewall the epoxy will give me a few minutes or more to position everything just right.  I have some 30 minute epoxy from Bob Smith Industries that I really like. 🏁

I'm like you in that I have to do updates and pictures as well or I loose my focus...when that happens it just becomes another, some what forgotten, back burner build.
Treat your builds like a race....don't worry about what's going on behind you, but rather concentrate on what's ahead of you.....or in other words, don't allow yourself to get consumed by self doubt in the present but rather plan your next future move and stay focused on that.

If someone is indeed bored with what you build , then that's on them .....perhaps they need to self evaluate their situation or motives for building.....I say that not just for your benefit but for anyone else's paying attention to this thread.

I'd much rather have a handful of legit, complementary remarks then a bunch of responses glad handing me and blowing smoke up my back side.

Good deal, glad I’m not boring anyone.  This is kind of a test run for me since I’m really trying to figure out how to build simpler so I get stuff finished.  I love the super detailed builds and may do one here and there alongside this style but for the most part this is what’s going to work for me.  Documenting seems to be good for me for keeping my focus and glad y’all are enjoying it as well.  Truth be known, I’m always looking at y’all’s builds for ideas as well so congrats and thanks to everyone who creates build content here!  What a great little place to hang out with you guys and gals!!!

Won’t be long now, John!!!  Today was very productive...I got the fan belt shortened to fit inside the front hoop and an AMT Nascar alternator fitted, radiator mounts made, header flanges shaped bumpers and hood/trunk pins fitted.  Pretty much down to building a proper air filter and cutting a hole for it in the hood and make a rock guard for the left side of the windshield.  Paint is right around the corner, fella’s!!!

Just a couple of assembly pictures before Thanksgiving day since I will be in Cedar Rapids with my son and daughter and their families tomorrow and I plan to get with Tom for a little while as well.  I am able to install the left side header and plug wires however the right side header and wires have to be finished with the engine in the chassis.  The point is...I didn’t think far enough ahead about installing the engine with headers installed...probably should have chosen headers that were straight back instead of turn out.  Anyway, I will get it done!!!  I think...the rest of the assembly should be pretty much uneventful.  Hopefully it will be finished over the weekend!!!  Y’all have a blessed, thankful Thanksgiving with your loved ones and friends!!!
