Title: Bobby Allison 1972 Coke #12 Monte Carlo
Post by: 18degrees on May 19, 2025, 09:09:48 PM
after seeing Mark's post about his build of the same variety, i remembered that i had one that i started and for some reason stopped.  may have been because i moved, whatever the reason is... this build to me was about 75% complete when i put it away.  Mark's post made me think about it so i dug out the box and realized just how far i had gotten, so i decided to pick it back up.  the only thing new i have done was to paint the body interior, prime the exterior, and paint and decal the hood.

AMT Bobby Allison MC kit, PPP wheels and tires and window net.  the hubs and lugs are painted steel, but for some reason my camera didn't pick that up.

not trying to steal Mark's thunder, given that his WiPs are very heavily followed, but here's mine...

Got the red laid down today, gonna give it a few days to cure before i mask and paint the gold. Wheels are soon to be attached to the chassis, did a test fit and i think i have the stance down pat.

Looking great, Dave. You will be finished way before I will which is good because it will be a helpful guide for me not to mess up in a big way. Looking forward to your results.

When you say you have the stance down pat, were there any modifications you made to achieve that? I ask because I plan on building at least one in the future.  Thanks

Nothing special. Just used some 1/16 aluminum tube in place of the kit metal axles. Had to drill out the PPP wheelbacks a bit with a 1/16 bit in my pin vise. I did this because i seem to have misplaced the kit metal ones. It may be a little thinner so the wheels sit higher up in the fenders.

I have it put together as a test fit with the bumpers, will post pics later tonight.

have a pic of the original car to compare.  in hindsight, the rear sits great but the front is a tad high.  i think this coulda been remedied by making the area of the suspension, where the axle rod fits through, the holes a bit taller so it could sit higher up in the wheel wells.  the only thing with this is with the AMT kit, i am pretty sure the rod goes through a hole in the oil pan too, so that would have to be made larger also. hindsight being 20/20, mine are already glued in place >:(
