Title: Ryan Blaney #12 throwback - Jasper
Post by: 18degrees on August 25, 2025, 05:56:21 PM
last night i got started on my next project, which is a #12 Ryan Blaney Menards Fusion throwback - the first tribute he did to his dad, the #77 Jasper lookalike.

a while back i was hunting for a color that is as close to the real thing as i could get, which is neon chartreuse.  not made in a rattle can... MCW has it, but i don't think they don't do cans anymore... or respond to my emails >:(
i have some florescent yellow made by Pactra and Tamiya, both are made for polycarbonate RC body shells, so they dry flat. not a big deal because i have cans of gloss... well, both weren't too close to the Menards color.  for those of you who don't know, neon chartreuse is a neon yellow with green tones.  pictures of these cars are nowhere near the color that they are in person.  amazing how the color doesn't photograph it's true color at all, they just look bright yellow.

during my search online for paint, i came across a color called "mellow yellow neon" made by a company called Tropical Glitz.  the pics that someone posted on their Amazon review made it look really, really close to what i was looking for... it was on some sort of automotive part and it photographed well.  so i ordered some.  and man this stuff stinks, the vapors are very strong.

anyway, all that rambling aside, i got the hood painted and glossed.  it didn't photograph as well as i would have liked, and for comparison i put it on one of my previous Blaney builds that was painted with MCW "Menards yellow", which turned out to be just a really bright yellow, not neon chartreuse.

like i said previously, it didn't photograph as well as i woulda liked, but i think the comparison is evident.

it just photographs like a bright yellow, you really can't see the green in it.  kinda disappointing for forum posting sake, but it should look good in person.  the body is in primer right now.

Being a bass angler, I use a bunch of chartreuse baits.....................a bunch! Anyway, some are more yellow, some are more green. I can see the green in the hood.

body is painted and glossed and the hood is decaled.  wasn't sure if the pics would turn out better directly under a LED lamp... y'all be the judge

everything is painted, just doing some detail work.  as long as the Stoney's decals co-operate with me, this should be done in a few days.  if not it's gonna be a coupla weeks as i am headed down south for a week next Tuesday.

been long enough since i built one of these that i put the fuel rail on backwards :o  the air cleaner still fits so no loss there

wheels and tires... painted the wheels with Tamiya florescent yellow just to see if there was a contrast... there really wasn't much difference.  hubs are from Brandon Miller that i had in my stash.

some random finished parts, the splitter is from Brandon also

and the seat is from Jim Rodgers (last one i had in my stash) and the shifter is, again, from Brandon

Got the right side wheels on, simply glued the wheel backs to the end of the suspension parts. Just have to match up the position for left sides, which may be a pain. Gotta eyeball it and pray for the best.

Nothing worse than 3 wheels that touch the ground and one that doesn't.
