Title: Christmas presents to myself
Post by: sentsat71 on December 13, 2017, 07:40:55 AM
All via online sources:

JoHan 1970 Ply Superbird (must be original release, no date on box and box is in sad shape, but contents seem okay)
Monogram '53 Ford pickup 1994 releases, molded in red
MPC McLaren Mk8d 1981 release molded in orange.....could have gotten the original release, but didn't want to shell out the $$ for it. (Also "replaces" the one I tossed before the move from FL to NM, (one of the builds I wished I'd kept, along with many other builds :'( :'( :(  )
MPC Datsun Scavenger "tow truck" monster truck. only bought it due to the sale price, and of course did not have the parts for the late '70's issue of its more wild custom version
and the big "prize":
the 1988 release by Ertl/MPC(AMT?) Indy 500 Hall of Fame Set: '63 Watson roadster; '63 Lotus Ford & '74 McLaren

It pays to be on city council.  :)

I had the feeling I was going to hear something like this!!!   ;) ;D ;D ;D

As for the Indy car combo, that will be a while....need to remember where to find the right tires for the Watson and Lotus, as well as resin noses for the Watson for both the '63 & '64 versions.
Will have to find the articles in SA that dealt with the Watson and Lotus and the issue the dealt with building the McLaren.
Also know there are "correct" decals out there for all 3(?) Indycals comes to mind.
Not to mention figuring out how to assemble that "snake" exhaust pipes for the Lotus.
Back in the mid to late '60's I found the Watson and Lotus as single kits back in my area here in Iowa, but those stores are long gone. But, anyway, I know the Watson kit had generic decals as the car # was 71. don't remember what decals came with the Lotus. Those 2 kits probably had the best tires ever offered, at least since then. I remember it was a BEAR trying to get those wheels in the center of the hard rubber tires, which IIRC, had more correct tread than those cruddy 2 piece tires this combo kit has, as well as the Watson I found in the '70's in So-Cal.....
Oh, by the way, some time back I came up with 2 other Watson kits, not sure if it was through Fred's site or Randy's.....I think......though one of the Watsons has no tires. but that one I keep changing my mind on what I want to do with it....now that I have another Watson, I could go back and swipe the Offy for use in a GK sprint, to go with the turbo Offy version I built 40+ years ago.

Paint......
what i have is a good ten years old, both acryl and enamel bottles.....am not set up in this house to spray paint anything, for one, not paint booth and no easy way to run an exhaust if I had one.
and no close Hobby Lobby or LHS, especially the latter.

So that would most likely leave the Ford P/U as being the 1st one to tackle.....but have to dig out the issue of SA that dealt with painting with various brands of bottle acryl, and not just plastic related paint.
Also means I need to dig out the earlier release of the Monogram '55 Ford P/U from the late 1970's that was not quite finished....but still need additional paint to finish that one. Know this latest (1994) has a different engine than the one from the '70's and most likely tires and wheels are different as well....   :)

will take any suggestions that any of you might have.....especially paints and brushes.....(like the ones mentioned in another post in the WIP section.

anyway, maybe that is what I need, a swift kick in the pants, to get my butt parked on the right chair (one sitting at the work table) that I keep having to move around to get to my CD collection.....   ::)  :-[ :-[

Oh.....
Forgot to mention what I have in mind for the Jo-Han Superbird....
Don't feel like using the kit frame/chassis, would like to get my hands on one of the old MPC NASCAR kits (like the recent issue of the '71 Wood Bros. #21) and use that to slip the Superbird body onto. ....That would make it go with the two originals I have....the Petty '71 Ply (Roadrunner? GTX?) and the Dick Brooks #22 Dodge Daytona, that ran in the 1970 Daytona 500 with the small block engine....Good plan? Yeah, I know......executing this plan is quite another story...... :( :'(

Unfortunately for me, the Petty build couldn't handle the heat in a non climate controlled storage facility for around 6 months after the move to Albuquerque, and I think the box it was stored in was sitting up rather close to the ceiling/roof, as the decals cracked....
the body had been coated with Future after the decals had been applied and dried back when it was built in early 1972....In fact IIRC, the car was built in Iowa, but wasn't decaled until I was in SoCal, after which I applied the Future.....

:)  My suggestion is to start with a snap kit.

Bought for just that reason, but in that tiny apartment at the time..........
or did I win it from the monthly drawings the model car club in Albuquerque......? :-\ ???
