Title: How to make Fender Flares?

Good morning,

I purchased a 1966 AMT Mustang coupe model kit and I would like to know if the flares pictured are custom or if anyone makes them. Thanks for taking the time to view my post and hope someone can help.

Perfect explanation. Is there a putty you'd recommend? I probably would have gone about it the wrong way had you not showed me lol. This helps out a great deal. Thank you very much!  :)

Wow David, your fender flares turned out really nice. My wheel wells are much smaller than the slicks I plan to run so figured i'd need to dremel the wells a bit to fit. Great advice!

I built the Gulf Mustang and i did the fender flares exactly like Davids drawing shows it. I enlarged the fenderopenings
and then superglued some sheet material. I glued a piece of wire into the edge around the flares to give it more stability.
Then filling and sanding... I used Testors contour putty.

David has offered some expert advice on doing fender flares, and if you look through his work on this forum you will recognize his abilities in magically transforming simple styrene into works of art.  Another possible idea is to use white plastic spoons as the flares rather than the flat stock.  It will still require some filling and sanding, but it gives the "bubble" effect just a bit better.  Not trying to take away from David's idea, just offering another alternative.

...my go to putty of choice is Bondo...no cracking or shrinkage and easily sandable.  Dollar wise you get way more bang for your buck with a tube of Bondo verses the small tubes of hobby putty....and Bondo Glazing and Spot Putty in the 4.5 oz. tube is available at better auto parts stores everywhere.

Hey guys. So I finally got around to customizing my first 1/25 scale model. Base kit is from AMT. Custom fit the front bumper from a Revell 1/24, 1965 Shelby GT-350R. molded trunk spoiler from buddy. I used .020 styrene to make fender flares. I then had to dremel the flares to my desired shape. Added puddy and then rounded the flares with sandpaper. I'm currently using the stock slim tires that came with the kit but, was hoping someone could help me find a larger drag/racing tire to fill the fender well. Here's a few pics. Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Thanks David. I added some racing stripes last night. Cut and laid down some masking tape. Outlined tape while on model from front to back with X-acto knife. Painted in between the lines as best as I could and wallah! Final detail will be painting tire decals and maybe adding front and rear window tint?

I'd try the grit sanding sponge if it wasn't such a tight squeeze but, unfortunately spray is on the interior windshield.
