Pulled the old flattie out of the barn and bolted on a set of good heads and an intake to get started.  Will shoot some paint on it tonight.

Yessiree, I’m a gonna do it!!!  I think about 3 scale inches would be about an 1/8 inch with no body filler...Easy peasy!!!

Chop it! That's what I did, too. I am going a little crazy with mine. All Ford, and I will probably put in the truck bed, with the narrowed '56 Ford back end. Was going to use a '57 Chrysler tail, but it looked kinda horsey.

Yeah, you don't have to go nuts to build a really nice looking truck. Look at the custom job on the AMT box. It's pretty conventional as far as the design, but the stance, paint job, and other details make it an outstanding looking model! LOVE those whitewalls!! I just go overboard a little sometimes. But I also appreciate a really clean, classic looking truck.

Also, don't expect to see a gleaming paint job on this one. It will be pure Rat Rod.

Very kool, Marty!!!  I’m diggin yours!!!  Hey David, your race car creations tend to go to the wild side and I think my hot rods tend to go there...polar opposites, lol!!!  Funny thing, Tom and I were recently discussing how neither of us seem to be able to build anything box stock.  I’m thinking in my mind, why not a box stock 34 Ford pickup...Yeah, right, never gonna happen, lololol!!!!😂 I can’t wait to see the cool variety of builds we end up with and I’m certain each one will be a winner!!!🏁🏁🏁

***By the way, I ended up cutting up a bed from a parts kit to put in a new bed floor rather than cutting out the good floor in the new kit bed.  I have an idea already for that bed...the parts kit is an old Lindberg issued kit thus the strange colored plastic.

Looking good David. A question about your exhaust, wouldn't it be simpler to route the exhaust over the tops of the cross-rails like in the original kit?  Just file/cut/torch/hacksaw/whatever necessary a couple notches like the ones on the right side rails, then lay the pipes in them.

Thought about doing that Rick but the battery box is molded in the way. I still might go that way but it looks pretty cool with the pipes showing when the car is upside down as it is. We'll see.

Slaps Forehead.  I am considering dual exhausts on mine also and now remember that was one issue that was causing me problems.  Maybe I should lay off the leftover chocolate candy from Christmas.

I’ve got my exhaust figured out.  Will have to shorten the tailpipes and make a cool pair of exhaust tips but at least the worst is over.  Should be ready for primer and paint in the next couple of days.

Lefturns - I looked at redoing it last night because yes, (extremely talented modeler that I am), I could just cut the battery box off and make a new one. However, the big V8 that comes with the kit that I am using for this build does not lend itself very well to the exhaust I wanted if it has to sit on top of the frame, mostly because of where the radius rods are in comparison to the exhaust headers. I eventually stuck with my configuration. It looks better and it is actually cleaner (less bendy!) than trying to come back up and over the frame.

If you are using the T-Bird V-8, another reason for leaving the battery box alone is that you can claim a 12 volt conversion.  The spare battery in my kit is a 6 volt, which I don't really think would gee-haw too well with the big old Ford.

Got some bench time this weekend.  Z'd the rear frame, shortened the box and chopped the top.  After looking at this thread after I hacked up all that plastic, me thinks Mr. Birky and I are having similar visions, but his looks better than my current mock up!  I'm searching for a new wheel & tire combo, don't like the set I thought I was going to run with.

I'm on a slight hold on mine.  I have cut out the plastic bed floor to replace it with real wood (I have ulterior motives).  Been looking for some scale 1 X 6" basswood, the smallest I can find is 2 X 6".  Don't really want to have to sand down the 2-by, but may have to.  I have some very wide stuff I could cut into planks, but would then lose the nice grain detail.  Anyone have any suggestions?

What thickness do you need? I have 1" wide by 3/16" thick. I also have 3/4" wide by 1/8" thick.

What I am looking for is something to represent a scale 1X6, which should scale out to around 1/32 x 1/4.  I have some 1/16 x 1/4, but it just looks too thick to be floor boards for a pickup.  Also have some sheet stock, it is about the correct thickness but is a couple inches wide.  I could cut it into planks, but it will not have the grain detail the narrower pieces have.  I checked one local Hobby Lobby and they didn't have anything that thin, hope to have a chance to visit another one a bit farther away in the next day or two.  If nothing else I will sand the pieces I have now down to a more representative thickness.

All of these WIP's look GREAT!!!

With the way I've feeling....battling a cold, I have not been doing much of anything....including my plastic canvas projects.....

Question to David or anyone for that matter, Would the stake bed in the kit be too high for a towing set up? Not the one from the kit, but the one from the MPC Datsun Monster Truck. Have been toying with the idea of taking those parts, including emergency light bar and modifying that push "bumper" to fit the '34 Ford P/U...
have been toying with that idea even before the idea of the community build came up.....
TIA

Ed I see no reason why those parts would not work.  The wrecker boom/light bar was the same parts in the "Scavenger" kit which was just a stock height datsun pickup.  If you have those parts, mock up a build and give it a good eyeballing.  If it looks off to you, modify it and build on.  I think they would work just fine as is and might even look pretty cool in the stock 34 pickup bed.  Now if you have any doubts, just send those parts along to me, I'll use em!

I have been tinkering with my build over the past couple weeks.  Right now it is in red oxide primer.  I have started salting it, but think I may need to back off a bit, it seems a bit much.  I am also trying to weather the bed floorboards, this is the bottom and will be sanded to remove some of the darkness.

Lefturns75.....Couple of reasons why I bought the Monster truck version of that Scavenger kit was that I found one somewhere for around half price a couple of years ago, and 2, had hoped they had left the original 4WD parts in the kit, but, sadly they didn't. Then R2 goes way beyond in their backdating that kit when they went back to the original issue 2(?)n1 kit with nothing form the late '70's Scavenger release....had that kit back then, but it was one of the first "casualties" of my 1st move out of m 1st apartment, and 1st real purge....A lot of unpainted and mostly inherited builds were also left behind....Back then I had "envisioned" building that Scavenger kit to a wild sprint car push truck, Tow boom may  not have been very useful for picking up damaged sprints....But the big burnout hit............................

Really interesting technique Tarheel. What does the salt do?
David, I have read about this technique on other forums and have watched a couple of You Tube videos about it.  It goes something like this: paint the body with a rust colored primer (red oxide, etc.), once dry spritz it with water and salt it where there would be rust, varying the amount in different places.  Next, spray a lighter coat of gray primer over the salt, let it dry and repeat the process of salting.  Lastly paint the final body color and let it dry.  When it is completely dry, place it in a pan of water and using a toothbrush scrub all the salt off the body.  The result is a quite convincing rust weathered finish.  At least that is what You Tube shows.  I have the gray primer on now, it should be dry enough for the next layer of salt.  Then into the dehydrator, a final body color, back into the dehydrator, and a view of the results.  Fingers are crossed.

A similar rusting technique is done with a little pinch of sponge, and white glue. The most important part is to seal the rust colors with a flat clear before you start washing off the white glue. I imaging the same might be true for the salt technique.

I use that technique for the initial phase of weathering, although I just rub off the salt areas instead of using water. The idea is to salt some concentrated areas. You don't want it too uniform, or it won't look natural. Here is an example of the car right after I rubbed the salt off, and enhanced the rust effects with Tamiya Weathering kits.

Not sure whether to go with it or repaint. It rained right after I painted it. Kinda rough satin finish??

I got the salt scrubbed off, unfortunately it also stripped off the maroon craft acrylic I had applied as a final body color.  On the positive side, I think the remaining chips of maroon add character to the overall look.

I've never tried the salt technique ,I've used the hair spray technique on two or three builds. I really like your results! I think that is beautiful! Can't wait to see more!

The salt thing is a trick that SOME watercolor artists use for texture, primarily for sunlight glistening off snow.  The paper has to be somewhere between wet and dry for it to work right. Knowing the right moment is the skill.

Beats me how you can know where to cut, lengthen, shorten, or whatever. I guess that separates the excellent builders from the so so builders. This one is really looking good so far!

Still working on this one. Don't seem to get very much time lately. I did change it up a bit . Different wheels/tires, roughed it up a bit. Wasn't real happy with the satin finish I got when I painted it gloss black and then it rained! Think this will be kind of a shop truck/hot rod. Sorry for the photo quality, got to work on that.  Thanks!

Rick :)

Got some paint on build #2 today. Taking David's advice to build one close to box stock. Using Mission Models paint as much as possible on this one.  Body done up in Pearl Root Beer Brown.

Mine is still sitting on the bench waiting for me to get back to it. I had a scheduled 3-day weekend, which turned into a 4-day weekend because storms in the area flooded some roads and school was cancelled.  However, one of my students left me with a small surprise and I have been down with the flu all weekend.  Hope to get this crud abated and back to the bench soon.

Well, as sometimes happens, the Candy Deep Red pickup got messed up. It all started with a small set of mirrors that I made that I thought would look better on this Street Rod version. The mirrors themselves came out good but in the final stages of the build when they were to be installed, one of the mirrors literally jumped out of it's tiny hole that I had drilled for it. It stuck to the door below. Then I tried to fix that boo-boo on the door. Then it got worse. Then I tried to fix it more. . . that just made it even more "worser". I ended up just buffing all of the paint off, re-prepping and starting over!! Here's the fresh repaint job. Sometimes in model building, as in life, a minor thing can end up becoming a big hairy deal that more or less ruins everything!!!!

A VERY loose mockup of my former rat rod, now officially a gasser. I just couldn't bring myself to installing a blown 427 SOHC in a rat rod. From the paint tip by David B., I used Rustoleum metallic on the scoop and injector. Thanks, David!

Had big plans to work on build #2 this weekend. But my company was moving to a mandatory work from home policy throughout the week, and I complied on Wednesday.  Was given a urgent assignment this morning that has to be completed over the weekend, so bench time will be limited. Will give it the old college try to finish this one up by the end of the month, but I'm not too optimistic.

Ordered them online from Modelhaus Tires.  This is set #640.  You get the 4 tires and wheels for $15. Easy order process and received them quickly with no hassles. I ordered a couple of sets last year and have been itching to use them on a build.  I recently ordered some other sets for some street rods I have planned and got them quickly too. Highly recommend Modelhaus Tires!
