Title: Another Jalopy Finished
Post by: BobD on April 21, 2021, 03:27:57 PM
Got this done for my friend Elden Happel for his birthday at the end of March. He has a big collection of models that competed at Tunis Speedway in Waterloo IA and I just added another.  He started building models out of cardboard in the early 1950s before any model kits were even introduced. He's in his 80s now and is still building!

As David Bogard noted on his Jim Strube '57 Chevy, this car went through several variations over a few seasons (lettering, rims, etc.), this build was kind of cross-bred between a couple of those. Pictured below is a previous build of mine done a few years ago along with the present model of Charley Moffitt's Ford coupe.

Truly gorgeous work Bob! And how long did Charlie Moffit drive anyway? I remember seeing him in maybe a '69 Camaro that Larry Jenkins owned (in fact Jenkins had two cars, the other one a Chevelle that he drove). Anyway, a legendary build of a legendary driver!

Very cool looking! Have to use the old line "they look fast just sitting there".

David - I'm not sure how long Charlie raced, but I believe he competed into the early 70s.  He won the 1960 Mid-Season Championship at Tunis Speedway in this car (that's when the Mid-Season & Season Championships actually MEANT something)!  The attached photo/clipping is from a bad accident in 1961.  He passed away in 2009 at the age of 80.

I knew he had gotten burned bad at some point but he still raced after that. His era was a totally different breed of driver than today.
