Title: My Attempt at the Salvino Modified
Post by: Danh4 on May 03, 2023, 02:09:43 PM
New guy here with a few progress photos of my Salvino Modified kit.  I'm in the process of building the Frank Fleming #40 car and so far it is going OK.  I'm usually an aircraft modeler so a whole lot of what's required here is new territory for me.  I had trouble with the aftermarket seat belts and ended up using Tyvek paper for the belts themselves instead of the ribbon material supplied (I think I got the wrong size ribbon in mine!).  It s a lot of fun though!

Looks very good to me, well done. From what I can see, your seatbelts look fine to me.

Man, Dan...that's really looking good! I've got a few of these kits and can't get to them yet. I have opened one up and gave it once over though. LOL Those cars and the ISMA super modifieds are my favorite race cars.

Thanks! The belts are a little on the thin side but they should look OK once the body panels are on.

Thanks Gary.  You're sure to enjoy yours when you do get to them, it really is a nice kit.

Looks good so far. I need to start mine too. Builds like this will eventually get me to do so.

Thanks guys.  I got a little more done yesterday, mainly getting the steering rack painted and the front suspension installed.

I'm just about done with work on the frame so I've been testing the fit of the body panels and thinking about how they are going to get painted and put together.  One thing I decided to do differently from the instructions was to glue the inner fender wells to the body sides rather than to the frame.  I did it by rubber banding the body sides to the frame, then I worked the fender wells into position and was able to hold them where I wanted them while adding glue.  Now they are guaranteed to fit the wheel openings in the body sides and should be simpler to paint.

I don't have a lot of experience painting glossy car bodies but I'm happy with how the black on the body panels has turned out.  It did not photograph well and looks terrible but is much better than it appears.  I used Tamiya Laquer thinned with Mr. Color Leveling Thinner.  I also used Tamiya Laquer for the gray on the frame and I've been very impressed with how it has held up to all the handling, no scuffing or rubbing off at all.

I think I'm going to decal the panels and gloss coat them (with Future) before adding them to the frame.

I'm really impressed with the fit of everything in this kit!

:) Several notes and thoughts here.  And thank you.

Black just doesn't photograph well.

I painted and hand lettered mine (a cudda been ) early and do not have my body panels on yet.

Only recently discovered those fenderwell panels.  So appreciate your thoughts on the rubber bands.

I'm surprised that the instructions have you glue those inner fender panels to the frame first and then just hope that they line up with the wheel openings later.  I'm pretty sure mine would not have but I could be wrong based on how well everything else has fit together.

Thanks!  I'm starting to see that the end is in sight and I'm looking forward to it too.  I'll probably build a couple more but I won't add all the extra wiring and hoses around the engine, it is all going to be invisible unless I leave the hood off.

Thought I'd better post a couple more progress photos before it gets much farther along.  First one is the finished chassis except for the carb, need to find some good reference pics to see where linkage goes, etc.  Last night I decaled the tires and this morning I added the decals to the body panels.  I'll give them a few days to dry and then spray a coat of Future over them.  I read somewhere that it's a good idea to let lacquer paints cure for a week or so before overcoating with Future so I'm in no hurry.

That's really looking good Dan..

Thanks!  I'm pretty happy with how it is going but a little worried about the adhesion of the decals.  I was cleaning out the holes for the nerf bars to mount in and the adjacent decal lifted from the surface.  I brushed a little Future under the loose area to get it back down but I wonder what's holding the rest of them on.  Is it a bad idea to apply decals directly over Lacquer paint?

Finished it!  A few little mistakes here and there but I know what to look out for on the next one now.  I really enjoyed every minute spent on this kit, it is a gem!
