Title: Introduce yourself.....
Post by: Tom Birky on July 11, 2017, 03:17:35 PM
We are starting to get a little bit of a group going here. Some of us know each other from Freds, but others may be new or we missed each other on the other board. If you'd like, write your name, last name optional,  where you're from and anything else you want to add. I'll go first!

Tom Birky, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. (Eastern Iowa, we've got corn and dirt tracks!) Building for a tick over 50 years.  I like building mostly late model dirt cars from the 60s through present. Some NASCAR and most anything Chevy.

Ed Krause, Fenton, IA
North Central Iowa
Have basically been around model cars, etc. for as long as I can remember between my  older brothers. Got my first kit for my B-day back when I was either 9 or 10 years old.
Now have a huge (to me) collection of kits waiting to be built, since trying to get back into the hobby in 2005, (haven't counted them...) have several WIP's stashed around, all of which were started in Albuquerque, as that's where I got the "bug" again. but still have not completed a build. Why, I don't know. Have plenty if ideas. Can start builds.....but.......
Found Fred's site after buying the Tobias Chevy coach modified kit, and studying the box art, found the web site.......
Just turned 64 a few days ago......

Tony Krist Oregon City, Oregon (just south of Portland)
60 years old retired and got back into models over 30 years ago. Build mostly all types of racing cars from F1, NASCAR, NHRA, short track, World of Outlaws, rally, any racing. Enjoy building figures too and dioramas.
Been a racing fan for as long as I can remember since my Dad took me to races in Portland when I was a kid and then I did the same with my son and now the grandson. Was lucky enough to crew on a couple of GT2 teams and worked for ESPN as a spotter for a few years at the CART and IMSA races here in Portland.
Wife still works so I take care of the house chores and yard along with my 2 West Highland Terriers and then I can spend time building models.

Bill Silva.  I am 51 and was born and raised in Southeastern Massachusetts where I still live. I started building at about six or seven and continued on through my teens. Got back into it for a couple of years in the early 90s and once again for the 3rd time in 2006 and still at it more or less over 10 years later.  My modeling passions are modifieds, old pickup trucks, and I've recently found an interest in short track beater boxes.

Greg Birky, brother of Tom, friend of all here on this board(hopefully)!!!  I live in Newton, Iowa, home of the Iowa Speedway.  I'm 65 years old and came back to building models about ten years ago.  I more or less dabble since I've been undergoing cancer treatment and dealing with blood clots in my leg and both lungs.  Anyway, I love camping, fishing and building models.  I love going to the races but had to forgo that in the last couple of years.  I spent quite a few years as a co-owner and builder/pit crew with a good friend of mine on a neat little Pinto mini stock and several years as a younger me helping build and crew a sportsman and late model here in Iowa.  I am married with two grown kids and two nine year old canine kids, a Bichon Poodle and a Maltese Yorkie, just like kids...So, back to the business at hand...I love short track stock cars, mostly dirt, hot rods, customs, street machines and mostly Chevy, Chrysler products, and Ford.  There's a little snippet of me and I've enjoyed reading about y'all!!!🏁

I am Ricky Johnson and live in the house my father built in 1963.  I was born and raised in western North Carolina (GO HEELS & PANTHERS).  After High School I joined the USAF and made it a 21 year, 2 months, and 18 day career.  Retired in '89 moved from job to job, not much in the local area since the downfall of the tobacco industry.  Got called into ministry in '99 and retired from that in '12.  Since then I have been driving a school bus (middle/high school) and really enjoy it; especially the summers off ;D.  I have been building since 1959, had a pretty good collection of AMT/SMP/MPC annuals and other assorted trophy series, etc., but got tired of packing them up for moves (USAF) so I sold then in '84  :'(.  After retiring from the USAF I again got the bug and have since amassed a rather large (for me) collection.  I will build almost anything: customs (mild and full), street rods/machines, drag cars, factory stock, and short trackers.  For some reason I seem to gravitate back to short trackers when I am trying to get out of a building slump, something about them holds my attention better than other builds.  There you have my manifesto.

Bob Portzline, age 71, McAlisterville, Pa. Located right in the hub of central Pa. dirt track racing.
I’ve been a racing fan for sixty five years, since my Dad took me to my first race at Selinsgrove speedway.
I built models from around ten years old through my teen years. Then built some Nascar models in the nineties. . I have been back building again for six or seven years. Now almost all of my builds are replica’s, of central Pa. dirt track cars, called bugs or super modifieds from the sixties.  My favorite time in racing was from 1958 thru 1967.Still a race fan, mostly sprint cars.

(ARCA Guy) Jim Hehl  47 years young and holdover from Fred's site.  Born and raised in Flat Rock Mi., I split the cold weather after college to sunny south Florida. Started building in the 70's when I was a young kid, didn't have any patience with it, mostly got glue on fingers and sniffed it as well! I spent most of my weekends growing up in the summer's at Flat Rock and Toledo Speedways idolizing Joy Fair, my hero in short track racing!

I really gave up modeling for years for chasing girls and having a good time, until it was time to get serious about work and family.  I by accident a few years back stumbled onto a site which Rod McLeod (Statsman) had built a Bobby Allison Camaro. I reached out to Rod and started supplying him a bunch of short track photos which I collected and we became friends and partners in creating some nice decals for all the replica builds. That really got me back into building and have been churning them out ever since!

Thanks for those who took the time and effort to start this page up. It's a pleasure being here with all the fine builders we have!

Hello all....
Bob Dixon  - born, raised & still live in Waterloo, IA.   66 years old, got my first model kit for my 9th birthday, a 1959 Ford hardtop (still have the original box).  Built models up until about 1972 then the usual story - more work and responsibility, got married, one daughter.
Got back into modeling with a few Nascar kits in the early 2000s.  My main building interest are replica race cars from the late 50s to early 70s that competed in NE Iowa.  Still attend regular weekly races at Independence & Vinton, Iowa.
Really enjoy the fellowship of everyone on this site along with the "works-in-progress" and completed builds.

Hey guys!

Jon Williams is my given name but have been called all kinds. I'm 47 have grew up Little Rock and currently live just north of the river in a place called Maumelle. As a youngster I spent every Saturday night at I-30 watching a guy named Wayne Brooks drive his UFO.  As far as modeling goes I started somewhere around 13 and had a slight derailment with girls and gasoline. I build mostly street cars/trucks of one kind or another with the occasional drag and dirt car in there.

I have a lovely wife who I've been married to for 25 years and one son. When I'm not working on boilers (the job) I enjoy playing with our real car a 64 valiant which the wife had when we got married.

That's me.

My name is Thom (aka Big Orange) and I'm the same person that was on Fred's. I'm a NJ native living in the Greensboro NC area for the past 15 years....they say I'm a "damn Yankee" now :)

Unfortunately, work and life restricts my time for building and checking in on forums. I turned the big "five-o" this year, and I work for a globally recognized company known more for building automobiles and motorcycles than building 7 passenger business jets.

I've been tinkering with models since my teens, and developed a passion for scratch built replica northeast modifieds. I have only completed 3 builds over the past few years (2 Richie Evans and a Charlie Jarzombek Vega) but I have 2 in the works. I'm between PC upgrades and a Flickr account, but I will try to post pics of my past builds for those who may not remember or have not seen before.

I used to hand letter race cars, trucks, boats and signs (remember brushes, paint and technique...lol) but gave up my talents with the advent of the computer generated graphics era. I grew tired of creating things only to have others copy and capitalize on. I spent a few years helping out a local dirt modified racer and learned most of what I incorporate into my builds from him.

What's left of my spare time, ha-ha, is spent cruising with my wife in her recently acquired 2015 Corvette, riding my Goldwing or doing a track day at Virginia International Raceway on my 2008 Suzuki GSXR 600

Hello Follks  I'm Jim White living between Dallas and Ft Worth TX , just turned 59 3 days ago , been married to the same woman (Carol) for 42 years we have 2 daughters both married and living on their own.
Retired in 1999 for health reason from a job  I loved doing , my wife and I started a small Safety equipment company called Fasttrax safety we made custom drivers suits, shoes ,gloves,5and 6 points seat belts and the 3 point nets you see on a lot of sprint cars .

I'v always been around racing in one form or another growing up my dad raced open wheel modifieds , my self and 2 of my brothers raced open wheeled modifieds and sprint cars, in 1995 we moved our business to INDY where I was a crew chief from a USAC sprint car and silver crown team also still making safety equipment for drivers
I cant remember when I started building models ,, have 2 brothers older them me both of then were building model's so I think I built my model's from thier junk and leftover parts

many of you might remember me from FRW site where I was a member and part of the Admin along with other to help him keep the site clean and good running order... now lets get back to what we love to do  build model's

Mark Gregory New Smyrna Beach Fl by way of Nashville TN. Introduced to the site by Tom when he helped with the search from another forum, I was looking for wide 5 wheels (Ron Coons). Build mostly round track race cars 60's & 70's to pre 2000. love anything with an open trailer or old school haulers.

Used to sit at the kitchen table & watch my dad build models before I was old enough to read the instructions. Built for many years then slacked off as kids got older, working and racing sorta took the place of modeling. Back to the bench over the last 2-3 years. Will try to post some photos when I can figure out the procedure.

Currently a retired manufacturing engineer from Peterbilt Motors. Still part time as a Nascar spotter of 24 years.  Member of 2008 Nascar truck champion team with Johnny Benson, 2009 ARCA champion Justin Loftin, 2012 Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti. 2015 Rolex 24 Ganassi team. Multiple wins across several series.

Jim Mullis here. I've always tried to keep "Hondo" as my alias on modeling sites.
I'm a project manager for a large hardware distributor.
I reside in the very most NW corner of Mississippi., just south of Memphis, TN.
Grew up in Charlotte and lived on the SC coast for a little while before going back home.
I was transferred to Memphis with my job over 20 years ago and never made it back.
Fan of most types of racing (sorry no drifting).
The large percentage of my models have been racing types.
Funny cars, top fuel, short track, older NASCAR with a few trucks/haulers thrown in.
I have enjoyed building since I was  "in the single digits".

Mark Shea, from Upstate NY.  Built tons of short track and NASCAR models as a kid.  Built and pit-crewed on a couple of big block dirt modifieds in the late 70's and early 80's.  Jumped over to the pavement side and worked on a tour-type modified with a buddy for a few years.  Still go the the races, chase the mods and sprint cars around the state.  Looking to get back into building models, with a goal to scratch-build replicas of the cars I worked on 30 years ago.  Will probably start with a couple of old Winston Cup kits to knock the rust off.  Very impressed with the quality of the builds I've seen on this site. Looking forward to learning new tricks from the masters here!

I suppose after 13 post and the fact that no one has told me to beat it and get lost that I should formally introduce myself.  I started building in the early 70's , first build was the USS Arizona.  I belonged to a model of the month club... forget which manufacture... sent me a different model every month so I built pretty much anything at that time.  Long about the late 70's it was cars only, even built a few Chevy's and a Dodge.  By the early 80's I was only building Fords, by the mid 80's I had quit building altogether.
In early 2007 I got a hankering to start building again after seeing what was now available out there.  I had decided that this time I was going to build only dirt track stock cars...Ford, Mercury, Edsal and Lincolns 1955 and newer.  Since there are only a very few kits that fit this criteria , I had to learn scratch building.
I scratch build with an emphasis on resin casting, which has become almost a second hobby for me.  To be honest,if I had to do a strictly OOB it would be a challenge for me not to add to it in some way.
Like many of you, I have a few partial builds, too.   http://www.shorttrackmodels.com/index.php?topic=846.0
Presently, I am working on a '78 Mustang II dirt Late Model that is being built in the spirit of the local Late Models from the 1980 racing season.

Good morning and a big welcome to jchrisf.  I'm glad you found us here.  When you have a moment please tell us a little bit about yourself and your modeling interests.  Once again, welcome aboard, sir!!!😎👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🏁

Thanks Greg.. I am new here and to the hobby.  I got interested in modeling about three months ago when a YT video was recommended to me for some reason on my YT feed.  It was by The Scalemodeling Channel.  I was so blown away by how cool his car looked that I had to give it a try.  Went out and bought nearly everything he recommended and got started.  I've built four models now and am working on a fifth but the weather here on the Space Coast of Florida is very hot and humid and keeping me from painting.

I'm mostly interested in race cars especially the road race cars of all kinds.  I like the look of Nascars but am not a fan of the sport anymore, however, I still think the cars look cool and look forward to building some.  I grew up in central Arkansas and always loved to watch the Outlaw Sprints when they came to I30 Speedway.  I've been wanting to build one and look forward to building a few.  My uncle used to be part owner of a late model back in the 70s and 80s so building one of those might be cool as well.  I also like Pro Stocks, Funny Cars and Top Fuel drag cars.. they look so cool.  Can't wait to build some of those... though I did build a funny car already and it was a fun build.

Looking forward to getting to know the folks here and seeing your cool builds and learning from you all.

I can relate to the hot humid Florida weather. Lived there four years, in the Orlando area, (2001-2005) but had not started to buy model kits back then, after stopping building in 1987 That didn't start until late 2005 after moving to Albuquerque in July that year.....

That was part of the reason.....roommate/significant other was able to get a transfer with the company she was with at the time to Albuquerque where her mother, aunt and gramdmother were living. She felt she needed to be there to help them out, and the company paid for the move!

Hi all I'm new to the form but I recognize a lot of guys on here from Fred's.  My name is Matt and I live in West Michigan. I am 40 and grew up watching friends and relatives race at local tracks and later helping in the pits. When me and my wife decided to have kids (two girls 8 and 10) I kind of retired from working in the pits but we still go to the races when we can.  I Build mostly short track models either replicas or fictional builds but I also enjoy building other subjects from time to time just to brake things up. I Build mostly in the winter months so it takes me a long time to turn out a model but I enjoy working on them either way. In the summer months I work on 1:1 project cars and enjoy hanging out with he family.

   Absolutely true Dr. Kerry story....
April 2014, my wife Amy is diagnosed with a rare form of Cancer, carcinoma sarcoma of the uterus, fortunately it was caught in an early enough stage that surgery could be performed....but there is not an Oncologist O.B surgeon here in Topeka , so she was taken to the University of Kansas Research Medical Hospital in Kansas City.
Her surgery was in the morning and by evening we (immediate family) were allowed to see her for a short time.  She had a team of about 6 or 8 medical staff that was monitoring her vitals around the clock for the first 2 or 3 days after the surgery.  Just before we had to leave she told me "Tell Dr. Kerry that I'm alive and doing fine .... one of the attending Physicians kind of gave me a weird look as they knew all of the Dr's involved and Dr. Kerry was not one of them.  I explained things the best I could and that Amy and Dr. Kerry had been online friends for a while.  I had a concern that when Amy was given the test where a member of the medical team would ask a question to test her memory cognizance reference her Dr. that her answer would be Dr. Kerry.  I had to remind her of this to which she looked at me kind of confused and admittedly said " oh yea..your right"

In my humble opinion, if there is anyone more deserving of an Honorary Doctoric degree from an institute of higher learning it would be our own Dr. Kerry.

Lotta hand lettering to do on it.  Hope it goes well.

Thank you for letting me join your forum and I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.  I must admit that I watched on the other forum but only as a  lurker and was blown away by all the great work I saw.  I have been a racing fan since age 3 and a modeler since 9.  I grew up n SE Wisconsin attending races at Jefferson, Wisconsin Dells, Columbus and Capital speedway in Oregon.  I like to refer to  Capital speedway as  great little racetrack with a town attached as I grew up in Oregon.  I spent time working on Mike Jacobson's late model stock car, a 1958 Ford.  Mike ran 390 and 427 Ford motors and I also bought 56 Ford Hobby stock and raced once when I broke my knee in a regular car accident.  Knee got well ad I joined Uncle Sam's Aero Club aka USAF and spent about 21 years there.  I also was on a couple of pit crews while in South Dakota.  I currently attend races at Eagle and I-80 in Nebraska have also been to Knoxville U.S. 36 speedway in Missouri and McCool Junction also in Nebraska.  I like to build almost everything but I really like to build stock cars and modifieds.  Hope to get back with you guys soon.  Thanks Al

Hello all, I'm Frank Davis I grew up in Albuquerque watching the SW supermodifieds race, I now live North of Seattle WA. I'll be 68 this year retired at 65 was a machinist / welder / hydraulic steering tech for 40 years. I build mostly older sprint cars and supermodifieds with a midget or two as well. I'm one of those builders that never sees a model as being "finished" there's always something to change or redo. Posted a bit on Fred's site when it was up and running. I need to figure out flickr in order to get some things posted on this site. I've seen some nice builds on these pages a lot of talent on this site.

Supers and Sprints are very cool. I'm with you on the early yrs. All though the ISMA over on the east coast are really cool. I saw the west coast supers run at Shasta Speedway(Anderson Ca.) a few yrs back and MAN...they were a bullet shot out of a gun. Very fast cars...plus...they look cool!

Really looking forward to seeing your work Frank...

Hi Gary, we live between Edmonds and Mukilteo in a small island of Snohomish county. I retired as a product support engineer in the marine propulsion industry for a company called Hamilton Jet, they manufacture water jets for engines rated from 200 to 6000 horsepower. It was a very interesting career.

A very cool show indeed. The Casino is pretty cool too! I haven't been to the Falls as it didn't appeal to me. I guess I should take my wife there for a look see. But....NOT TODAY!!!LOL It's snowing and 29 outside my kitchen window as I type to you. I'll bet you're getting NAILED up there. Well...stay safe and warm and we'll talk in a bit.

Well, we stay pretty busy.  I thought we'd try to post our pictures today, but have run out of time.  My 1/16 Freddy Fryar Sedan and wingless sprint car on a trailer are on Dave's pictures but neither won anything.  My Wacky Racer coupe got 3d in Open Wheel,  and my Freddy Fryar 1/16  Chevy LM got 2d  in Miscellaneous/ Odd Scale. ( No pictures yet )  It was beaten out by either a turtle or bathtub on wheels.  Not sure which.

We will get to them soon.

Post by: Alan Barton on July 26, 2019, 06:39:52 AM
Hi guys, you might remember me as ausbodies.  I haven't been on here for about two years after my profile went AWOL and wouldn't let me back on.  Been lurking ever since!

The thing is, I use computers every day at work and the things drive me crazy so when the cyber-nasties strike in my off -time I tend to drop the lip and go and sulk in the corner.  Anyhow, the other day I thought, what the heck, I'll try and start a new account and see if it works.  So far, looks like it does.

I am still building but my job these days keeps me away from the modelling bench more than I would like. I haven't been finishing as many models of any type and unfortunately my dirt track builds (you know we call them speedway down under!) have really suffered because about two and a half years ago I accepted the responsibility of writing a monthly model car column in Australian Street Rodding magazine.  It's great fun although the deadlines come around scary fast.  Better yet, I get paid for it which lets me spend a bit more on models without hitting the savings account.  But it does mean that nearly all my builds in that time have been hot rod based rather than speedway.

So, a quick summary, I am 61, have been building since I was 8, and work for a mining equipment company as a product trainer.  I drive a 1929 Ford A roadster hot rod with a 350 Chevy as a daily as much as I can.  I enjoy building pretty much every category of dirt car plus hot rods, nostalgia drag cars, Aussie cars and the occasional classic 50s and sixties Ford or Chevy. It's great to see all the old stagers here as well as a bunch of new guys.  I probably wont be as prolific as I was back in the days of Fred's but I will pop in from time to time and if I can work out a way of posting photos without locking into contracts with a hosting mob (I just don't need the grief of fighting with computer companies) then I hope to post some builds as well.

Cheers
Alan

Welcome back! I remember you and some of your awesome builds. Looking forward to seeing you hot rod builds. That's been a major part of my life also. I had a flamed '40 Ford that I built back in the eighties. Plus a bunch of others, 32s, 41 pu and more. My modeling time is a little less too. I'm going to be 79 soon and just bought a newer HD.  A 2015 HD Tri Glide and we ride as much as we can 'cause life gets real short. Anyway, welcome back.

Hello,
My name is Blaine (Frank) Miller.
Thank you to the admis for accepting me to this site.
I have not built a car model, until last year, in 48 years.
Although I continued to build aircraft and armor during this gap.
I am very familiar with the local entries that Bob D is building, as I to, grew up attending the Sunday night races at Tunis Speedway.
All the work being done here is amazing.
Thank you
Frank M.

Hello, Maineboy here. Nathan Pitts from Garland, ME. Near life long Mainer except for several yrs in NH. Turned 74 last month. Had major surgery with right shoulder replacement last Dec and left knee replacement on Mar 22 this year. Am doing well and back to work in a cabinet shop belonging to a friend about 4 hrs a day. Feels good to get out of the house.

Was introduced to dirt track racing about 1958 when my parents took me to Unity Raceway in Unity, ME, about 40 miles from where I live now. Jalopy racing on the old horse track where we sat in the grandstand that was probably a few decades old then, and still stands today. I have quite a few photos of that track in the 50's if anyone desires to see them.  Classes were 6 cyl and V8's. Corners were flat and sand had been banked up as a fence. Loved the smash ups in the beginning  but after a few trips was hooked on the competition. My avatar shows a 1956 Chev 150 2dr post sedan, powered  by a 265 sbc that my best friend and I built in the spring of 1966. We were both 17 at the time. We raced at Graham Lake Speedbowl in Ellsworth, ME. I gave it up a few yrs later when pressures of marriage, children and work became more important. But have many priceless memories of it.

Began model building as a 4th grader. Airplanes first, remember a model of a Lockheed Constellation I displayed in my 4th grade classroom. By 7th grade graduated to cars. Had a 58 T bird displayed there that I remember. I remember the old AMT 3 in 1 kits and built tons of them. $1.49 each in the early 60's!  40 Ford coupe and sedan were some of my favorites. Entered a few model contests then. 2nd was my best finish. Read model mags and saw others doing plug wires, brake and fuel lines. All we had to work with was mom's thread and that did not work good. Dabbled in it over the years in several ways with RC planes and model rr's. Got back into it about a yr and a half ago with "big rig" trucks. Now back to cars. Got a 55 chev 2 dr and wanted to build it as a modified. Google searched images and turned up a link to this blog. Spent a few weeks lurking and saw the  best model work I have ever seen. Can't match that totally but will do what I can. Have many memories and several hundred photos of race cars on Maine tracks, dating  back to 1948 or so when it started. I consider it an honor to be here and hope I can contribute a bit to it.

Nathan

I'll second what Tom said. I'm 72 and began watching short track races at Bowman Gray Stadium, in Winston-Salem, NC around '62-63. Maybe you can post some of the pictures you have, never know when someone will see something they really want to build.  Welcome aboard.

I am going  back to my earliest memories and this is what I saw. This is what started the fascination with race cars, on these little dirt tracks that still excites me today. This is turn one and two at Unity Raceway in Unity, ME circa about 1958. Actually this may have been a bit earlier as I seem to remember that board fence being higher than this. There were complaints from those folks in those houses over the dust. The clouds of it are indeed a sight to behold. To say this was crude is an understatement! But to say it was both "fun" and "exciting" was not an understatement at all!

We have to remember that up into the 70's at least,  just about every driver, owner and builder in America started on dirt short tracks that looked an awful lot like this one. We can't build a model of any car without knowing it's history. A photograph is fine but knowing about just how that car was used is also crucial to knowing how to build that model. I am a race car fan but also a fan of race car history and the two go together real good.

John2 thanks for the kind words. Like you this work is getting harder for me to do but I still enjoy what I can do. Built a big rig truck as my first project in some time. Took me about a year. Have to paint in the garage as my wife has an illness that is aggravated by strong odors. So don't do much spray painting in the winter. Finished the big rig and am working on a 57 Ford 300 2dr post sedan. I am building it as a street drag racer as that is what we had during my high school days. No track near us so ran them on the streets. The 57 was owned by a friend and I always loved that car. Working from a memory over 50 yrs gone is not easy but hope to capture the look. Seems like a great bunch of people here who really appreciate the work everyone does. Glad to be a small part of it.

You said you had a '55 Chevy that you wanted to build as a Modified. "Modified" meant many different things in different parts of the country so do you have any pictures of what you were wanting to build? Depending on what that is, there might be others on here that can really help.
Title: Re: Introduce yourself.....
Post by: Maineboy on June 08, 2021, 07:47:13 AM
David, thanks for the response. Like you, I know that modified can mean different things in different places. Maine was always behind the rest of the country. In 1966, in Maine, "modified" meant about anything from cut down and narrowed pick up cabs to full fendered 40 Fords. The only rules seem to involve wheels and tires and engine limits under 302 cubic inch, which the 301 Chevy fit nicely into. Saw tons of them. I envision a 55 with big tires, outside the fenders, low slung with high cutouts for the tires and big motor, like a 454 or some such. Would like to see what others have done in that area.

But the 55 is on the shelf for now. Just got the 56 Chevy Del Ray two door with post kit and am going to try to replicate the car seen in my avatar as we built the 1:1 version back in 1966. Found one can of Krylon at Michaels last week that is very close to the right color. Was only can on the shelf and didn't buy it when I first saw it but went back and got it later.

I have seen quite a bit of your work here in the past few weeks. Your work is awesome and there is a lot more  really nice work by others on this site too. That's why I joined, seems like a nice bunch of people also which is a great asset. Like lots of things in life building models is a learning experience and we learn much from each other. Got questions for you re particular cars, which I have trying to figure out, that I shall bring up in the future.

Any chance you could post a photo or two the '56 Chevy in the avatar? That is one of the minor issues on this site, the fact that nobody can actually "see" the avatar photos since they are so small. Thanks!

I didn't want to feel like I was hogging the thread.

In 1966 we were competing in the "bomber" class at Graham Lake Speedbowl in Ellsworth, ME, a 1/3 mile muddy dirt track. I don't think the bombers were too far removed from the jalopys that started all of this. This was my friends street car in high school. Was a 56 Chevy 150 with the old 235, with a split manifold and Hurst mystery shifter on the three speed.  We went to Bar Harbor in this car  one evening, always checking the girls out you see, and we got up the next morning and gutted it. Went from steet to race track in a day, more or less. Had to get a motor and got a 55 Chevy 265 2 barrel out of a local wrecking yard for $40. Had a 4 bbl manifold and carter carb so that was no issue. Had street tires and wheels on it. My welding skills I was leery of at the moment so my friends mother's cousin welded the piping. We cut  lot of it with acetylene torch. Nothing fancy there for sure. This is taken the second Sunday morning we raced it. the rt rear was crinkled before we could even get the paint on it. But we painted it anyway. I think it was "crinkle metallic blue"...at least on that fender. My friend is sitting behind the wheel in his old straw cowboy hat he always wore. Seems like it was an awful long time ago.

In hindsight the piping jobs in most of these cars was really outrageous by modern standards. Safety was not the priority that having fun was back then. They ran modifieds on this track on the same days in other heats. Guys wearing tee shirts and sneakers would get in them wearing an old high school football helmet from 1953...and thought nothing of it. A 301 would make even a wheelbarrow go fast in those days. We never rolled this one but the car was destroyed later in the 66 season and we had a different car for the next 2 yrs.

I take it you are building this currently so just start a thread in the "Cars With Fenders" Section or the "Fab Shop" Section and have at it! Looks like a fairly straight-forward and quick build!

I will do that soon, but have to finish my 57 Ford 300 sedan project first. I can't stand working on 2 at once, it's confusing and I have lost small parts before. Will post pics of the 57 on the non race car thread when I get a chance to photograph it.

Hello everyone, I thought that I had introduced myself before but it seems that I haven't. My real name is Steve, I live in southern Arkansas, nine miles from the Louisiana border. I'm from the Knoxville, TN area, lived there most of my life but due to my dad's career, I've lived all over the eastern United States. If you see me mention Escanaba, MI (U.P.), Grant, AL, Guntersville, AL, Nashville, TN and here in Crossett, AR... I've lived there.

Anyway, I'm 62 years old, a United States Army (M.P.) Veteran and a 30+ year Law Enforcement retiree. I started building models when I was eight years old and continued into my 30's. I also raced stock cars as a hobby. I raced on dirt in east TN, and then on asphalt in middle TN, southern KY and north AL. I've also fished off and on since childhood so after I quit racing, I started fishing bass tournaments. I still love bass fishing, but no longer fish tournaments.

Every time we would go to Hobby Lobby, I would always look at the model cars and trucks. When my mother in law was looking for something else to get me for Christmas 2021, my wife said "get him a model car, he's always looking at them." And just like that, I'm back!

In addition to looking at models at Hobby Lobby, I've been a lurker here and at Fred's old site.

I'll stop now, but if anyone has any questions, fire away.

My name is Duane Garner, I'm 67 years old, living in Clovis, NM. I've  been modeling all my life: before my 6th birthday I wuz the disassembler of my older brothers models, after age 6, I started putting them together for myself and have continued to do so throughout my life. You name it, I've built one of them; boats, airplanes, figures, animals, transformers, sci-fi, cars, etc. I'm a USAF retiree currently holding a job as my church's maintenance man. I've  been married 3 times with two daughters, 4 grandkids and 1 great-great grandchild. I've been to every state in the union, lived in half of them, plus all of the world except Russia! I'm an 11 time mini-stock champion at Clovis Motorsports Park. My current model kick is DIRT L/M's and Vintage Outlaw and Sportsman Modifieds. I'm by no means tech savvy, just got a smart phone, which is much smarter than I, and bought a tablet to watch YouTube videos on. This forum was recommended to me by a good modeling friend, Jim Folkers. I'm totally impressed by the models I've seen here, y'all rock!

Hello all, thanks for having me in the group!  I live in Upstate NY, am just about to turn 60 years old, and have been modeling most of my life. I joined because I love racing of all types and especially Nascar Modifieds.  I am primarily a 1/72 aircraft modeler but I just had to get the modified kit from Salvinos and I'm getting along pretty well with it.  My hat is off to all of you who build such beautiful models in this scale.  I had big ideas about adding all sorts of wiring and hoses and that is proving to be not as easy as it looks!
