For those who love auto racing history, this is Keith Knaak, father of the IMCA modified in 1963 at Davenport, Iowa.

Living in SoCal at the time, I did not realize that the IMCA style modifieds were started that "early".
They have come a long ways since then....

Can't remember the exact year I 1st sat them run, I believe at the Fairmont, MN strack they brought back memories of the mid to late '60's style modified that ran at Fairmont and at around 1965-66 at the Algona track. I liked the "mean" look of them.....and now the more current style modified has that same "mean" look when watching the come out of turn four of any track....

Thanks, Greg, for the brief history lesson....

I got to see the modified on display at Boone in 1999 marking the 20th anniversary...it was pretty neat and not a racing part to be found on it, except the shoulder harnesses and lap belt of course.  As I vaguely recall, mid 60's Buick Skylark??? convertible frame, late 60's Olds Toranado wheels, the Vega body exactly as pictured w/ the chained doors and non descript, spartan small block Chevy......
I didn't see my first modified until 1983...Riverside Park in Riverside, Mo.    The first five or six years of the modifieds where my absolute favorite....before they started to change into the cookie cutters we know now.
