Started on this one by cleaning up an old mercury body from a 1972 built kit that I had lost half of the pieces on so there was no way to resurrect it. I'm going to use the body as a test bed for my new airbrush to see how it works and see if I like the paint I have chosen to use on the Monte.

Which Monte Carlo kit are you going to use for the body and for the frame?

MarkJ

Jh. Below are some recent photos that will answer your question and show the test bed body primed and the decal sheet I will use and hope I don't mess up because there's only one chance per decal on this sheet to get it right. Not like the sheets I make with 5 spares per decal sheet.

Got the gold on but need to prime the real build white. The gray makes it look too dark. Need to add the red and test my color separation line ability. Thats my new airbrush that is making my airbrushing so much easier.

I painted the sides of the test body with Tamiya white primer and will shoot Createx Wicked red on one side and plain old Createx wicked gold on the other side. Luckily, I found a bottle of it in my stash that had not separated out from age. It appears to be more metallic than the pearl gold I used the first time. If it looks good, I will start preparing the Monte Carlo body for paint.

MarkJ

Got the test body ready for paint today. I will paint one side red and the other side metallic gold to see if I like it better than pearl gold. I might end up mixing the pearl gold with the metallic gold. That's the beauty of a test body. I originally had the test body primer gray, but I switched to Tamiya white primer in the can.

Had to clean the airbrush and came up with a system using paper towel and black sharpie to keep everything in order so I don't get lost putting it back together like the first time I cleaned this trigger style air brush. It has a lot more parts than the plunger type airbrush. I used the wicked gold on white primer on the right side of the test body and it came out much better than the wicked pearl gold on gray primer did. I also liked the wicked red and will use both of them on the Monte Carlo body.

That turned out amazing! Can't wait to see it on the MC!

Wonder if that "test body" might end up as a Fantasy Cup car one of these days... ;D

Actually Razor, it will continue to be a test body forever. Eventually having many coats of white primer and different colors of paint for future builds. You just can't get a full picture of the paint from a white test spoon or piece of paper.

Got some more work done. Had to shore up the gap at the hood to grille. Poor engineering by the model company.

I also have a Bobby Allison Coke Monte build that i started a few years ago that went back in the box. I used the actual BA #12 kit that was released a handful of years ago... saw that Mike's has one of those particular sealed kits for sale for $65 :o

I actually think my LHS may have one of those still on the shelf...

Dave, I can't remember when I bought this kit, but it was at hobby lobby and wasn't that much. I might have paid 40% off for it as well. Your kit might not be the model king kit like this one and is probably better engineered than this one. These model kings are always a little weird.

yah, your build made me go back and look at mine... AMT reissue from a few years ago.  and surprisingly it's closer to being done than not, so that may be the next one to roll with.  no idea why i abandoned it, doesn't look like i had problems with it that stumped me... may have been what i was working on when i moved.  i distinctly remember working on this at my old house.

Just remember, the wheels that come in the model king kit are way too deep set to be like the ones on the actual car. I had to get some PPP wheels and tires to fix that problem.

Did some more work getting rid of gaps at the front and finished the fairing at the quarter glasses.
I have decided to go ahead and prime the body white, but I won't prime the tub or the chassis. Be back to painting pretty soon.
