As one who spent a year in remote Alaska, I can tell you the Alaskans  mean the 48 contiguous states.

I am in Wisconsin, I always thought the lower 48 states meant across the middle of the US..... Me doan know??? Anyway I didn't have the cash so it's a good thing they went to someone!!!!! I know all to well about paying bills Pat!!!!

   It's ok, Kerry.    Lower 48  started with the people of Alaska, after statehood,  many of whom moved there, referring to home, and  the rest of America as the lower 48.  I guess  that does not include Hawaii, and I do not know how they refer to the mainland.

In California, LA means Los Angeles, but down south, it means Lower Alabama.
