Title: Southern Supermodified Ledgends
Post by: john2 on January 26, 2026, 03:14:44 PM
:) I'd like to share about this book.  Some of you longtime southern short track people ( like me )  might be interested.

It is the story of the super modifieds between 1963 and 1968 from Texas to Georgia and Florida.  About the cars, wings, drivers, owners, builders, mechanics, tracks, promoters, flagmen, and announcers.  Many, many pictures.  Many, many drivers. Many that I saw race, as far back as the mid 1950s. Like Ival Cooper, Ellis Palasini, Hooker Hood, P.A. Luper, Curley Walters and Bob Herrin.

Plus many, many  others whose names I remember from reading National Speed Sport News.

It is written by Gerald Hodges.  Copyrighted, I believe to be 2025.  He admits that there are some mistakes and errors in it, because some of the old people he interviewed have memories that are going, like ours.  Whynot Speedway, near Meridian MS is mentioned as being near Biloxi MS.  And Simpson County Motorsports Park is listed with a 1970s date when the track was built in the early 1990s.

Still in all, it gives the history of the development of the wings, including one guy who used an inverted truck hood. Also talks about brawls, and cheaters.  Very good book, I believe.  314 pages. $ 32.95 plus shipping.

You can see about it ( and a million other racing books) at Coastal 181 Books.    info@coastal181.com

:) Well, I spelled Legends wrong in the title of this topic.  I try to be correct, but I guess it doesn't make a lot of difference in the grand scheme of things.  ( Excuse me while I look it up. )

Did quite a bit of proof reading in my career job.

Have a great day.
