That is a very suffisticated jalopy. Out here, in those days, virtually nobody had cages with mandrel bends, and nothing had that many cross braces in it either. That looks like the early West Coast modifieds style chassis.
A friend found an old jalopy chassis in a barn a few years ago. When I looked at it, the hair stood up on the back of my neck. It's a wonder any of those guys survived. It was so rough that we took it around to a couple of old jalopy racers, and asked if this was typical. They assured us that this one was one of the better ones. What little padding the cage had was shop rags wrapped with electrical tape.
