Brian Conn

...another guess
   1950 Fiat 1500E

Brian, that car is too early and it has fenders but the wheels on it look pretty close. Thanks for the guess.

Brian Conn

Thanks for the clue and pointing me in the right direction....

I'm not going to guess anymore but I think that wheel looks excellent- I can't wait to see this when it's done

MarkJ

Thanks 76. I'm waiting on some spoke rods I ordered so I will soon start making the tires till I get the spoke rods.

MarkJ

Got started on the tires. Tedious work using the cutting compass.

How will you make the tires Mark? By stacking layers then sanding? I'm really enjoying this. I was thoroughly impressed when you did the IROC Camaro building most of your own parts. This completely scratch building everything is on a whole other level.

Thanks, Steve. What you see here is the inside and outside of the tire. I will make an inner and outer belt to connect the two of them so the tire will actually be hollow. I will strengthen the sides with rods put through the discs and then put a framework on them to fill with epoxy putty. I will sand that down to make the tires round on the outside. It will all come clear eventually how I'm going to do it.

I thought I would need to add the little wedge pieces to the sides of the tire, but that work is such a time waster that I believe all I need is the radius wall in the middle of the sides of the tire to fill in with epoxy putty. I will scoop it in place with a plastic spoon.

Been doing some honest, investigative research on this end as time permits....
I'm guessing a Vanwall Grand Prix car ....cant decide between 1956 (Harry Shell, driver) or the 1957 that Stirling Moss drove at Monza.

Brian, you are by far the closest anyone has gotten so far. You just need to guess the make of car and you will have won the prize which really is nothing but satisfaction for your investigative prowess. So very close.

Very happy with the epoxy putty. It cures very hard and is easy to smooth out with a Dremel type tool using a cylinder-shaped course sanding tube. What I have so far looks like a tire and wheel. After painted it wont even look plastic anymore.

Got both sides of the first tire done. Just need to add some regular putty to get the sides totally smooth and add some tread to the surface of the tire using a rasp file. Will roll the tire over the file to leave the imprint of the file that will simulate tire tread.
